Obituary of Frank “Corkey” Cortez

Mr. Frank "Corkey" Cortez Frankfort - Mr. Frank "Corkey" Cortez, 86, of 502 Ingersol Ave passed away Wednesday, January 5, 2005 with his daughter by his side in St. Elizabeth's Medical Center. He was born in Herkimer on July 24, 1918, the son of the late Gregory and Barbara Macri Cortese and he attended Herkimer Schools. He served during World War II with the US Army Air Force in the Asiatic-Pacific theater from April 24, 1942 to his Honorable Discharge on January 16, 1946 as a Corporal. He was married to Josephine Barberio on June 4, 1949 in St. Mary´s Church. Mrs. Cortez passed away on August 6, 2001. Mr. Cortez was employed as a Finisher for Library Bureau, Herkimer for many years until his retirement in 1980. He was a Communicant of Our Lady Queen Of Apostles Church and a member of the American Legion Post #845, Frankfort and the IUECWA. Until Corkey´s illness, he was a faithful member of the Herkimer McDonalds Coffee Club. He was an avid sports fan and a dedicated fan of the NY Yankees, NY Giants and Notre Dame. Frank is survived by one daughter, Barbara Cortez of Frankfort; two sisters & brother in law, Catherine Jess of Ilion and Clara & Jack Terrell of Herkimer; his in laws, Julia & Steve Eskoff, Theresa & Robert Harris, Mary Barberio and George "Shank" Green; his special friends, Marian & Richard Ruller, Peter Kowalczik and Michael Lovecchio and several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by one sister, Mary Sanguine and one brother, Joseph Cortez. His funeral will be held Saturday morning at 9:00 AM from the V. J. Iocovozzi Funeral Home, Inc., 203 Second Ave. Frankfort and at 9:30 AM in Our Lady Queen Of Apostles Church where a Mass of Christian Burial will be Celebrated by the Rev. John Yanas. Spring interment will be in Mt. Olivet Cemetery. Calling Hours will be Friday from 2-4 & 7-9 at the V. J. Iocovozzi Funeral Home, Inc. Members of the American Legion will meet Friday Evening at 7:15 at the funeral home. In leiu of flowers, contributions in Frank's memory may be made to Our Lady Queen Of Apostles Church or the Frankfort Volunteer Fire Department. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home. Frank's family would like to extend a sincere thank you to Dr. Wadhera, the nurses and staff of Herkimer County Public Health, St. Elizabeth's Medical Center and Valley Health Services for the wonderful care and compassion shown to him during his illness and passing.
