Mohawk - Mr. Americo "Mike" Scialdo, 98, of John St. passed away Monday, September 12, 2011 in the Folt's Home with his loving family by his side. Mike was born in Herkimer on August 21, 1913, the son of the late Claudio and Bettina Comparoni Scialdo and he attended Herkimer schools. He was married to Lena Vendetti on February 1, 1941 in St. Anthony's Church, Herkimer. Lena passed away on February 17, 2000. Mike served in the US Army during World War II from Apr 24, 1942 to Jun 12, 1945 when he was honorably discharged. During his time in the Army he served in the African and European Theaters and received the Silver Star for bravery and the Purple Heart. Mr. Scialdo was Co-owner and Operator of the family business, C. Scialdo & Sons in Herkimer where he worked as an Expert Stone Mason. He was a member of Sts. Anthony and Joseph Church where he also served as a Eucharistic Minister. Mike is survived by four sons and one daughter and their spouses, Col. (R.) Claudio and Cindy Scialdo of Chantilly, VA, James Scialdo of Herkimer, Bettina and Jerry Helmer of Grain Valley, MO, William and Diann Scialdo of Albany and Michael Scialdo of Mohawk; his beloved grandchildren, Simone and Sean Krasan, Andréa and William Lorenz, Danielle Scialdo, John and Samantha Scialdo, Heather Scialdo, Chad and Angie Helmer, Nicole and Mike McCormick, Lauren Scialdo, Joseph Scialdo, Peter Scialdo and Victoria Scialdo; nine great-grandchildren; one sister, Ida Guzzo of Herkimer; two brothers, Marshall Scialdo of Naples, FL and Rudy Scialdo of Herkimer; his canine companion, Daisy and several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by three brothers, Roland Scialdo, William Scialdo and Andy Scialdo. His funeral will be held Saturday, September 17, 2011 at 9:00am from the Petykiewicz, Iocovozzi & Burns Funeral Home, 329 S. Washington St., Herkimer and at 9:30am in Sts. Anthony and Joseph Church where a Funeral Mass will be celebrated by the Rev. Thomas Lawless. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery. Calling Hours will be Friday from 4-8pm at the Petykiewicz, Iocovozzi and Burns Funeral Home. Mike's family would like to extend a special thank you to the nurses and staff on the Folt's Home's second floor for the kindness and compassion shown to Mike during his stay and passing. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Mike's memory may be made to the American Cancer Society, 100 Lomond Ct., Utica, NY 13502 or to the National Kidney Foundation of CNY, 731 James St., Ste. 200, Syracuse, NY 13203.
