In his youth, Bob was an exceptional athlete and was recognized as one of the best football players coming out of Frankfort High School. He later played with the US Army's Football team while serving in Korea, the Frankfort Vet's Football Team and coached the Frankfort Falcons both of which were semi pro teams. He possessed a spirit of loving life and had the versitility of enjoying a cold Beck and having good political conversation and a good story at Thurston's Restaurant.
