East Herkimer-Mr. Orrie G. Scalise, 73, of 113 West St. passed away Wednesday, January 13, 2010 in St. Luke's Memorial Hospital after a long and courageous battle with cancer. He was born in Herkimer on September 4, 1936, the son of the late Orient and Helen Kelley Scalise and he attended Herkimer schools. Orrie was married to Marie Scanlon on June 16, 1956 in St. Francis De Sales Church, Herkimer. He was employed as a Manager for Great American until his retirement in 1996. He was a communicant of Sts. Anthony and Joseph Church. Orrie was a life member of the East Herkimer Fish and Game Club, the East Herkimer Fire Department where he served as a Deputy Chief, UFCW Local #1 and a former member of the Polish Community Home. He loved music and played the saxophone all of his life, playing with the Herkimer High School Band in his youth. He loved to build, especially bird houses. He also loved to snowmobile and garden. During his retirement, Orrie was an attendant for Iocovozzi Funeral Homes for many years. Orrie will always be remembered for his love of his family and he cherished spending time with his grandchildren and is survived by his beloved wife, Marie Scalise; three daughters and sons in law, Kathleen and Mark Mornelli of Little Falls, Linda and James Murphy and Susan and James Baldwin all of East Herkimer; his grandchildren, Lisa Murphy, Robert Murphy, Daniel Baldwin and Aaron Baldwin; one sister and brother in law, Theresa and Anthony Cugliandro of Ilion; his in laws, Joan Scalise of Norwich and Francis and Mary Margaret Scanlon of Kirkville; his aunts and uncles, Frank Kelly of FL, Aurora Daver Frank, Edward and Eleanor Scalise and Emma Scalise all of Herkimer and several nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. He was predeceased by one brother, Joseph Scalise on June 22, 1998. His funeral will be held Saturday morning at 9:30 AM from the Petykiewicz, Iocovozzi & Burns Funeral Home, 329 S. Washington St. Herkimer and at 10:00 AM in Sts. Anthony and Joseph Church where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by the Rev. Thomas Vail. Spring interment will be in Calvary Cemetery. Calling hours will be Friday from 4-8 PM at the Petykiewicz, Iocovozzi, & Burns Funeral Home. Members of the East Herkimer Fire Department will meet Friday evening at 6:00 at the funeral home for services. Orrie's family would like to extend their sincere appreciation to Dr. Butala and staff for the wonderful care and kindness shown to him during his illness.
