Frankfort - Mr. Carl "Cy" Castilla, 93, of 311 Bennett Rd. passed away Sunday, March 30, 2014 in St. Elizabeth's Medical Center with his loving family by his side.
He was born in Ilion on September 11, 1920, the son of the late Angelo and Rose Spatol Castilla and he attended Frankfort schools. He served in the US Army and attained the rank of Corporal in the 4th Infantry Division, 20th Field Artillery Service. Corporal Castilla's duties included chauffeuring the Captain in his Jeep and on June 6, 1944, he landed on Utah Beach during the Normandy Invasion. He served his country until his honorable discharge. He was married to Hattie Ladd on November 14, 1947 in Frankfort. Hattie passed away on April 13, 1979.
Carl worked as a Log Scaler at Union Fork and Hoe Co. in Frankfort for several years until he purchased the family farm in Frankfort which he owned and operated for many years. He was an avid golfer and bowler. He was a member of Maple Crest Golf Course and the Bridgewater Bowling Alley.
Carl is survived by two beloved daughters and sons in law, Diane and James Creedon of Utica and Elaine and Dennis Connor of Brandon, FL; two grandchildren and their families, Carey Barrett and her children, Cali, Seth and Caley and Haley and Joseph Carbonell and their son, Connor Joseph; his best friends, Jim, Butch, Sam and Mike and several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by six brothers, Anthony Castilla, James Castilla, Joseph Castilla, Frank "Red" Castilla and Thomas Castilla; his nephew, James P. Castilla and his grandson, Kory Leland.
His funeral will be held privately at the convenience of his family. In keeping with Carl's wishes, there will be no public calling hours. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the V.J. Iocovozzi Funeral Home, Inc. 203 Second Ave. Frankfort.
Carl's family would like to extend their sincere appreciation to Dr. Halpern and nurse Ashley at St. Elizabeth's emergency room for the kindness and compassion shown to him.
