Obituary of Gemma Tassino
Please share a memory of Gemma to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Frankfort - Mrs. Gemma Tassino, 99, affectionately known as Aunt Gemma by so many, formerly of Third Ave. passed away Monday, January 6, 2014 in the Masonic Care Community with her family by her side.
She was born in Oriolo, Province of Calabria, Italy on August 23, 1914, the daughter of the late James and Anna Bonamassa Accattato and attended schools there until she came to America with her family in 1929.
She was married to Guy Tassino on July 29, 1950 in St. Mary's Church. Guy passed away on October 19, 1987.
Gemma was employed as an Assembler for Univac in both the Ilion and Utica Plants until her retirement in 1979.
Although Aunt Gemma never had children of her own, she nurtured all of her nieces and nephews with love as though they were her own. She was never too busy to help anyone and always showed special care to those in need. She played so many different roles; nurse, cook, cleaning lady or babysitter, no matter what the need, she could fill the deed and wanted nothing in return. A truly special lady, Aunt Gemma in her later years had lived alone, but she never set a table just for herself. She had a table that stretched for so many and always had room for another. Her family always enjoyed getting together in her kitchen. Gemma loved God and dedicated much time and energy to her church that her brothers built, the former St. Mary's Church. She was a communicant of Our Lady Queen of Apostles Church and a very active member of the St. Francis Di Paolo Society Aux. in her early years.
Aunt Gemma is survived by her beloved nephews and nieces, James Accattato of New Hartford, Janet and Anthony (Butch) Spina of Deerfield, Kathy and Bruce MacLain of Whitesboro, James D. and Pat Accattato of Frankfort, Anna and Jack Berney of Clinton, Jeri and Steve Frederick and Judy and George Zipko, all of Frankfort; her sister in law, Catherine Accattato-Snider of Frankfort; other very special people in Aunt Gemma's life included those she considered to be like her grandchildren, Anthony and Jennifer Spina and family and Frank and Andrea Spina and family; her dedicated Goddaughter, Marie Palumbo and several great nieces, great nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by two sisters, Marceline Torchia in 2005 and Sara LiBritz in 2012 and three brothers, Nick Accattato in 1929, Frank Accattato in 1965 and Dominick Accattato in 1989.
Her funeral will be held Wednesday morning at 10:30 AM from the V.J. Iocovozzi Funeral Home, Inc., 203 Second Ave. Frankfort and at 11:00 AM in Our Lady Queen of Apostles Church where a Funeral Mass will be celebrated by the Rev. Paul Catena and assisted by Deacon James Bower. Interment will follow in Mt. Olivet Cemetery. Calling hours will be Wednesday morning from 9:30 - 10:30 prior to services at the V.J. Iocovozzi Funeral Home, Inc.
