There aren't too many people I know, that I can honestly say I remember the first time I met them. But I will never forget the first time I met David Russell; and ever since he has never ceased to amaze me. It always impressed me that someone could be so intelligent yet have such a sense of humor.
Our weekly games of pitch, our chats about farming and funeral directing, his advice, smile and laughter are things that I will miss. I can see him somewhere peaceful now, dancing to "Bad, Bad Leroy Brown", gnawing on some long hots and washing them down with a cold glass of scotch and water.
Curly, along with everyone else, your "undertaker" will miss you. What else can be said, my friend? "C'est la vie".

Dave - glad I had our time with the pumpkins Sunday night. I thought of you as I read this ("Intellectual growth should commence at birth and cease only at death." - Albert Einstein) Rest in peace my friend.

Beautiful, Justine. Your father and I travelled on parallel roads. I was brought up on a truck farm at a time when there was little mechanized equipment. I did not like farming and went into education. Your father loved both careers. I have always found him to be a true friend. He used to let me borrow his truck to deliver my golf cart to the golf course and then get mad because I filled his gas tank. My answer to his anger was always this, "when you loaned me the truck, the truck, in essence was mine. So if I choose to put gas in it, it is none of your business." Then we would laugh over it. I know my loss can never be as traumatic as yours, your sister's and your mother's. He will be sorely missed.

David and I go back as good friends more years than I care to remember. He and I travelled parallel roads. We both farmed, which to the dismay of my father I did not like, and we both entered and left the education field. David loved both of his careers, I loved one of them. But we had many conversations on how things were agriculturally done before mechanation. I and I know, Kristine, you, your daughters and your grandchildren have suffered a great loss. I, also will sorely miss him.

THE FARMER'S PRAYER
"Old farmers never die, they just go to seed."
Time just keeps moving on
And many years have come and gone
But I grow old without regret
My hopes are in what may come yet.
On the farm I work each day
This is where I wish to stay
I watch the seeds each season sprout
From the soil as the plants rise out.
I study nature and I learn
To know the earth and feel her turn
I love her dearly in all her seasons
For I have learned her secret reasons.
All that will live in the bosom of the earth
She is the loving mother of all birth
When my body is old and spent
And my soul to Heaven has went.
Please compost and spread me on this plain
So my body Mother Earth can claim
That is where I wish to be
Then nature can nourish new life with me.
So do not for me grieve and weep
I didn't leave, I only sleep
I am with the soil here below
Where I can nourish life of beauty and glow.
Here I can help the falling rain
Grow golden fields of ripened grain
From here I can join the winds that blow
And meet the softly falling snow.
Our sincerest condolences to the Russell family.

I remember how generous Dave always was in giving rides. One time he drove me all the way to Cold Brook to get my French book from my boy friend's car.
May Dave rest in the peace of The Lord.

To all of the Russell family, I send my sincerest sympathy and condolences on the truly unexpected passing of my dear friend and "Class of 58" classmate. Over the last few years, it was wonderful to reunite with him at our annual class get togethers. I have great memories of Dave throughout our school years...even though time and distance separated us for a number of years, when we talked at our reunions it was like we had never been apart. There is no doubt in my mind that Dave was a very hard worker at what he did - he loved his family and his farm. Dave will be missed by all of his classmates - Rest In Peace - my friend! Carl Corriggio, FSCS Class of '58!

Our Papa was so much to us all. Complex yet simple, he could make you think about all the ins and outs and contemplate every detail, and then on the other hand just dive right in. Before his passing there were many moments these previous weeks that had me remember some of the excellent adventures we had, and sadly the ones we did not get to. One of the traveling shows on PBS (his favorite channel) went to Montréal and stopped at the beautiful botanical gardens there, of which we went to. It then started retelling of our summer vacation to my family. How we got to experience so much, as our dad- not someone by no means you would call a planner, took us on what seemed to be a tour guide's vision. Next was Halloween, and the remembrance of this holiday to me as the beginning to a pattern of making some of my closest friends and extended family. The first outing I remember was with the Daly's and I think Papa stayed behind with Mr. Daly to pass out candy. He loved to give sweets out on holidays, and get them for us when we went out to dinner, and for French tutoring rewards…any excuse was a good one, and somehow the leftovers would always disappear even with someone that, "didn't like sweets" was around. Then we went to the State Fair here in AZ, not expecting much I came out of there smiling. It was not the Fair, as much as it was the way I remembered those Herkimer County Fair times with Papa that made me smile. When I went with my own family I turned into my dad. After some rides with my little ones, I went on one just for me (and Dad) - some twisty-turn-up-side-down-thing, and remembered to hand my sunglasses to my husband, thankfully Papa's glasses just danced on his nose and he never lost them in the loop-de-loops. Then we stopped by the horticulture buildings and petted the farm animals - all of which dad would do too, even with his hay fever, it was always worth it to him. Before we left, we got the chance to look at all of the prize winning entries in the exhibits building. In turn recalling of all of the work Papa would do during the summer (and really all year long) to get us some of the best blue ribbon entries he could. How happy he was seeing his daughters, especially this shy one mustered up the courage to accept these, taking no credit for himself at any time.
When people are surprised by what I can accomplish, when they laugh at me for the quirky things I do, when they notice my playful side with my daughters, when they are complimenting me for the kind things I've done, and hard work they have seen… I will know this is YOU shining through me. Though there is not much comfort right now, I know these memories, and the retelling of them will keep you alive through us. We love you so much, I love you so much. J'taime XOXOXOXO
