Please share a memory of Francis to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Herkimer - Mr. Francis T. Longe, Esq., 95, of 507 Henry St. passed away Sunday, November 3, 2013 in St. Luke's Memorial Hospital with his loving family by his side. He was born in Herkimer on July 12, 1918, the son of the late Patrick and Fanny Gallo Longe and he attended Herkimer schools, graduating from Herkimer High School with the class of 1935. He went on to receive his Pre-Law education at the University of Detroit and Michigan State University. In 1943, he entered into the United States Army during World War II where he served his country until his honorable discharge in 1946. Fran continued his education at Albany Law School, graduating with the class of 1949. He was admitted to the New York State Bar on June 27, 1949 and began the general practice of law in Herkimer. Fran suspended his full-time practice in 2000 after 51 years. He continued to assist in matters for friends and family until only recently. Last December, his colleagues honored Fran for 63 years of service and as the oldest living member of the Herkimer County Bar Association. During his long, distinguished career Fran served his community as a Councilman on the Herkimer Town Board. He was appointed Attorney for the Town of Herkimer for twelve years and served as Attorney for the Herkimer Central School District for seven years. He was a communicant of Saints Anthony and Joseph Church, a member of the Herkimer Elks Club, the Republican Club, the American Legion, VFW and an enthusiastic participant in the "Depression Boys" club. Fran was an avid golfer and tennis player. He was a founding member of the Mohawk Valley Country Club and a member of the Yahnundasis Golf Club. He was a remarkable athlete playing tennis until his late 80's and golf until recently. Most of all Fran was a devoted husband, a caring father and grandfather, a trusted friend and always a gentleman. Fran married his beloved wife Kathryn Blanco on February 20, 1954 in Albany, NY. Fran and Kay were blessed with a nearly 60-year romance. They were the embodiment of a loving couple; deferential partners, devoted companions and dearest friends. Fran always cherished time spent with his family and friends as they did with him. He was always happiest when at home with his family or with his pals on the golf course - especially the 19th hole. Fran is survived by his wife, Kathryn Blanco Longe; his daughter and son-in-law, Lisa and Daniel Clarey of Herkimer; son and daughter-in-law, Jamie and Wendy Zeigler Longe of Salt Lake City, UT; his three beloved grandchildren, Jesse Licari, Nicholas Longe and Alex Longe and his sister-in-law Beatrice Longe of Saratoga Springs, NY. His brother, Frederick Longe, predeceased him. His funeral will be held Friday morning at 11:00 AM in Saints Anthony and Joseph Church where the Rev. Edmund Castronova will celebrate a mass of Christian burial. In keeping with Fran's wishes, there will be no public calling hours. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Petykiewicz, Iocovozzi & Burns Funeral Home, 329 S. Washington St., Herkimer. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Fran's memory may be made to St. Francis DeSales School, 219 N. Bellinger St., Herkimer, NY 13350 or to a charity of one's choice.
