Obituary of John F. Gardinier

E. Herkimer - Mr. John Gardinier, 90, of Walnut Ave. passed away Thursday, April 18, 2013 in Little Falls Hospital with his loving family by his side.
A lifelong resident of the Mohawk Valley, he was born in Little Falls on November 24, 1922, the son of the late John and Mary Carrig Gardinier. He attended St. Mary's Academy, Little Falls, graduating with the class of 1940. On October 27, 1942, John enlisted in the US Navy, serving in the Pacific Theater aboard the USS Neshanic where he witnessed Naval combat and the surrender of the Japanese on board the USS Missouri in 1945.
Upon returning to civilian life at the end of World War II, John went to work for General Electric, Utica where he spent the rest of his working life of 35 years, specializing in defense and working as an engineer in GE's Radar Equipment division. He was also a communicant of Sts. Anthony and Joseph Church in Herkimer.
On October 20, 1951, John married Louise Angelicchio of Herkimer in St. Anthony's Church. John's life was devoted to his family and he centered his activities on raising his children and in later years, enjoying his grandchildren. John was also known for his sense of humor, his story telling, his gardening ability, and he almost single handedly built his family's home in East Herkimer.
John is survived by his wife of over 60 years, Louise Gardinier; his five children and their spouses, Mariann and her husband, Dan Nolan, Phyllis Hummel, Janet and James Swanson, Diane and Mark Knapp and Brian and Jennifer Gardinier; his brother, Burrell Gardinier of Little Falls; two sisters, Betty Rich and Alice Hysack, both of Little Falls, 16 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren and several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his beloved infant son, Patrick on March 17, 1959, one brother, Richard and one sister, Margaret.
John's family will have private services at the Petykiewicz, Iocovozzi & Burns Funeral Home, 329 S. Washington St., Herkimer Saturday morning at 9:45 with his Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 AM in Sts. Anthony and Joseph Church, S. Main St., Herkimer, celebrated by the Rev. Thomas Lawless, pastor. Interment will be in St Mary's Cemetery. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the, NY 13350.
The Gardinier family extends their heartfelt thanks to the staff of the Folts Home and Little Falls Hospital, as well as the Emergency Response Team.
