Obituary of Matthew H. Mierzwa
Please share a memory of Matthew to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Frankfort - Mr. Matthew H. Mierzwa, 79, of 275 Daley Rd. passed away unexpectedly on Friday, February 15, 2013 at his home.
Matthew was born in Frankfort on July 9, 1933, the son of the late Joseph and Agatha Szczyciel Mierzwa. He attended Utica schools, graduating from Proctor High school with the class of 1951. In 1956, Matthew enlisted in the US Army's Artillery Division as a Heavy Weapons Infantryman and proudly served his country until his Honorable Discharge in 1958. He worked as a Machinist for Chicago Pneumatic, Utica, for many years, retiring as a Foreman. Following his retirement, Matthew worked full time on the family farm he grew up on. The cows took up a lot of his time as well as the vegetable and flower gardens, hay fields and chopping wood for the stoves.
Matthew could fix anything and was always willing to assist others who needed a helping hand. In the past few years as his vision began to fail, he relied on many friends and neighbors to help him get around. Matthew's family would like to extend a special thank you to Matt's close friends, Tony and Marion for their constant contact and friendship over the years.
Matthew is survived by one brother, Charles Mierzwa of Farmington, CT; his beloved nieces and nephews, Janet and Dennis Jendrzejewski of New Hartford, CT, Audrey and Scott Daggett and his great niece, Sarah Lynn Daggett, all of Farmington, CT. He was predeceased by his sister, Ida E. Mierzwa on October 11, 2004 and his sister in law, Genevieve Mierzwa on October 21, 2008.
His funeral will be held Friday, February 22, 2013 at 10:30 AM in St. Anthony of Padua & St. Agnes Church, 422 Tilden Ave., Utica, with the Rev. Mark P. Kaminski, officiating, assisted by Deacon William R. Dischiavo. Calling hours will be held Thursday evening from 5-8 PM at the V.J. Iocovozzi Funeral Home, Inc. 203 Second Ave., Frankfort.
