Mr. Vito P. Sciortino
Herkimer - Mr. Vito P. Sciortino, 89, of 203 W. Smith St. passed away Sunday, January 31, 2016 in his home with his family by his side.
He was born in Frankfort on August 3, 1926, the son of the late Michael Angelo and Concetta Sgroi Sciortino and he attended Frankfort schools. He was married to Catherine Kate Maida on October 2, 1948 in St. Anthony's Church by the Rev. Gustav Purficato. Kate passed away on July 14, 2013. Vito was employed as a Truck Driver for Mohawk Metal, Frankfort, for over 40 years until his retirement in 1994. He was a communicant Sts. Anthony and Joseph Church and a member of it's St. Anthony's Crusaders and Crafty Ladies Aux. He was also a member of Herkimer Elks BPOE Lodge #1439 and the Ilion Moose Lodge #1010. Vito's greatest love was his family and could be seen at his garden on Marginal Rd.
Vito is survived by one son and daughter in law, Michael and Donna Sciortino of Herkimer; one daughter and son in law, Connie and James Thurston of Endicott; ; he also has five grandchildren, Lisa and her husband, James Recore, Matthew and his wife, Valerie Sciortino, Jessica Sciortino, Michael Sciortino and Andrew Thurston; four great-grandchildren, Dylan, Kyle, Emily and Ella; his in laws, Dolores Scalise of Schenectady, and Gus Maida of Herkimer and several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by one sister, Josephine Paratore and five brothers, Joseph Sciortino, Anthony Sciortino, Charles Sciortino, Frank Sciortino, and infant Vito Sciortino.
His funeral will be held Saturday morning at 8:30 from the Petykiewicz, Iocovozzi & Burns Funeral Home, 329 S. Washington St. Herkimer and at 9:00 in Sts. Anthony And Joseph Church where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by the Rev. Quy Vo. Spring interment will be in Calvary Cemetery. Calling hours will be Friday from 4-8 at the Petykiewicz, Iocovozzi & Burns Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in Vito's memory may be made to the Alzheimer´s Association Mohawk Valley Chapter, 258 Genesee Street, Suite 509, Utica, NY 13502 or to Sts. Anthony and Joseph Church Capital Fund, S. Main St., Herkimer, NY 13350. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
