Mr. Joseph F. Varlaro Herkimer - Mr. Joseph F. Varlaro, 88, of 320 S. Bellinger St. passed away Friday, January 11, 2013 in his home with his family by his side. He was born in Frankfort on May 28, 1924, the son of the late George and Madeline Durant Varlaro and he attended Frankfort schools. Joe served with the US Army during World War II in the European Theater and was Honorably Discharged on February 19, 1946. He was married to Rose Marie Annotto on June 29, 1946 in St. Anthony's Church by the Rev. Gustave Purficato. He was the owner and operator of Joe's Amoco, Joe's Esso and Joe's Exxon for many years. Joe was an Automotive Facility Inspector for the NYS Department of Motor Vehicles, Utica, until his retirement in 1986. He was a communicant of Sts. Anthony and Joseph Church and a member of the St. Anthony's Crusaders, Herkimer Elks BPOE Lodge #1439, American Legion Post #38, V.F.W Post #4915, Herkimer, Tony R. George Post #6, Herkimer, a Fourth Degree Knight with the Knights of Columbus Council #579 and a member of its Color Guard, Herkimer and the NYS Magistrates Association. He served as a Herkimer Policeman and later served as acting Village Justice and Town Justice in Herkimer for 27 years. Joseph is survived by his beloved wife, Rose Marie Varlaro; his sons and daughters in law, Chief Alfonso J. and Deborah Varlaro of Herkimer, Joseph A. and Barbara Varlaro of Oriskany and Christopher and Mary Pat Varlaro of Blossvale; one sister, Frances Mariano of Schuyler; his daughter in law, Mary Ann Varlaro of Frankfort; six grandchildren, Joseph F. and wife, May Varlaro, Tiffany S. Varlaro, AJ and his wife, Tonya Varlaro, John Varlaro, Rose and her husband, Adam Kiedrowski; four great-grandchildren, Lorenzo, Sofia, Gabriella, AJ Varlaro III and Adam Kiedrowski, Jr. and several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his sister, Philomena Lawrence. His funeral will be held Tuesday morning at 9:00 from the Petykiewicz, Iocovozzi & Burns Funeral Home, 329 S. Washington St. Herkimer and at 9:30 in Sts. Anthony and Joseph Church where a Mass of Christian Burial will be Celebrated by the Rev. Thomas Lawless. Spring interment will be in Calvary Cemetery with Full Military Honors. Calling hours will be Sunday from 4-8 PM and Monday from 4-8 PM at the Petykiewicz, Iocovozzi & Burns Funeral Home. Members of the Knights of Columbus will meet Monday evening at 6:30, the Herkimer Elks at 7:00 and the V.F.W and the Tony R. George Post #6at 7:30 at the funeral home for services. Joe's family would like to extend their sincere appreciation to the doctors, nurses and staff at the offices of Dr. Kaye, Dr. Crawford, Dr. Liu, Dr. Sharma, Dr. Butala, Dr. Elamir, Dr. Chaffe, Maureen Zumpano of the VA, St. Elizabeth's Medical Center, Hospice and Palliative Care, Faxton-St. Luke's Regional Cancer Center and to MOVAC for the wonderful care and compassion shown to him during his illness and passing.
