Herkimer - Mr. Edwin J. Komendarek, 86, of 928 Westwood Dr. passed away Wednesday, January 2, 2013 in St. Luke's Memorial Hospital with his family by his side.
He was born in Herkimer on December 3, 1926, the son of the late Feliks and Julia Fietkiewicz Komendarek and he attended Herkimer schools, graduating from Herkimer High School with the class of 1944. He served in the US Navy during World War II from May 11, 1945 until his honorable discharge on July 24, 1946. He received his B.S. Degree in 1948 from the State University College of Oswego and later his M.S. degree in 1949. Edwin was affectionately known to his friends as Prof and completed his graduate studies at the State University College at Oneonta and at Cornell University. He was married to Marilyn Petykiewicz on October 24, 1959 in St. Joseph's Church, Herkimer. He taught Industrial Arts and Adult Education at Herkimer and Little Falls schools for many years. He developed Stueben School into the Adult Vocational Center. Prof served 18 years as the Director of Vocational Education for Herkimer County BOCES until his retirement in 1984. Under his supervision, Prof was instrumental in establishing the new BOCES Complex in East Herkimer. He was a communicant of Sts. Anthony and Joseph Church, Herkimer, served as past president of the NYS Association of Vocational-Industrial Education, past president of Herkimer and Little Falls Kiwanis, a member of Epsilon Pi Tau, Vice Chairman of the Herkimer and Oneida County Manpower Planning Committee, a member of the Board of Directors for the Herkimer County Chapter of the ARC, former board member of Herkimer Savings and Loan, board member of Dollars for Scholars, a member of the Polish Community Home and the Falcons.
Edwin is survived by his beloved wife, Marilyn Komendarek; one son and daughter in law, Peter and Sharon Komendarek of Norwich and his granddaughter, Meghan and several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by one sister, Evelyn Dawidowicz on October 11, 1993.
His funeral will be held Monday morning at 9:00 AM from the Petykiewicz, Iocovozzi & Burns Funeral Home, 329 S. Washington St. Herkimer and at 9:30 AM in Sts. Anthony and Joseph Church where a Funeral Mass will be celebrated by the Rev. Thomas Lawless. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery in the Spring. Calling hours will be held Sunday from 2-4 and 7-9 PM at the Petykiewicz, Iocovozzi & Burns Funeral Home.
