Henry J. Drapalski, Jr. posted a condolence
Wednesday, May 30, 2012
Uncle Joe was a true hero. In one history of the Normandy invasion, I read an anecdote about the heroism of Sgt. Aiello and how he single-handedly took out a Nazi pillbox. In the hallway of his home, he had displayed the citations he received during the war. After reading them, I remember asking him how he found the courage to perform those acts of bravery, and I will never forget his answer: "Those boys [in my company] depended on me; somebody had to act, or else we'd all be killed." It was that simple to Uncle Joe: something had to be done, so he did it, without regard for the danger to himself. His courage has been a lifelong inspiration, and many of us will miss him.
