Ella Wicks Johnson posted a condolence
Thursday, March 15, 2012
I was saddened to hear of Walter's death. My name is Ella Johnson, formerly Ella Wicks. I lived next door to the Czuryla family at 228 Stimson Street for several years while growing up. We had fun as kids. One of the memories I have of Vot and his brother Edmund is their chasing each other around the yard arguing who was going to do the dishes. My sister and I would join in and spur them on. They were wonderful boys. I moved to Washington D.C. in 1944 and one day, a couple of years later, I answered a knock at the door and who should be standing there but Vot, fresh out of the service and on his way home to Herkimer, but he still took the time to look us up and have a nice visit. He also remembered us in our time of sorrow when we lost our beloved mother by attending her funeral. What a wonderful life he had. God bless his family.

My thoughts and prayers are with all of the Czuryla family. I spent many days at the Czuryla house while growing up in Herkimer and being friends with his son Walt jr. Mr Czuryla was a kind and caring person. He always had good advice and told a good story. I will always have fond memories of him. God Bless, Chuck Seaver

Mr. Czuryla was an outstanding member of our community. He belonged to many clubs and organizations, and also held various leadership positions within those groups.
Throughout his lifetime he was responsible for initiating charitable donations to numerous
programs in our area.
Walt truly deserved the awards he received including the Great Heroes Award from the American Red Cross and the Outstanding Citizen Award from the Elks Club and the Herkimer Hunger Coalition. He was happiest when surrounded by family and friends, especially his cherished grandchildren. His legacy will live on forever, and he will truly be missed by all who knew him.

Irene, Karen, and family, it was with great sadness that I learned of Vot's passing. He was truly a genle, kind, and very good man. I will always remember his pride as he showed me his roses, especially those by the statue of Blessed Mother. I think that she is most likely telling him how much she likes them herself. My prayers are with you and your entire family at this sad time. God will wrap you all in His arms and bring you strength and comfort. God bless you all. Jan Szuba
