Herkimer - Mr. John G. Chvatal Sr, 94, of 110 Sherwood Acre Dr passed away peacefully Tuesday, April 5, 2011 in his home. He was born in New York City on December 22, 1916, the son of the late Henry A. and Marie Zikmund Chvatal. He attended public schools in Winfield, Queens and Valley Stream, LI and graduated from Central High School, Valley Stream, NY. He attended Nassau Collegiate Center, Garden City, LI and graduated from the US Army Intelligence Industrial Security School, Fort Holabird, MD. He was married to Lucia Siankiewicz on in 1943 in St. Joseph's Church, Herkimer. Lucia passed away on May 22, 1971. He was later married to Mary Golicki in 1976 and she passed away on December 15, 1980. From 1941 to 1947 he was a member of Troop D, New York State Police, serving in many area sub-stations. In 1943 he was decorated with the New York Daily News Gold Medal for Valor by then Governor Thomas E. Dewey for his single handed capture of three bandits armed with a Thompson sub machine gun and three semi automatic pistols on Christmas Day 1942. He was later employed by Chicago Pneumatic Tool Company as assistant Chief Guard. In 1961 he transferred to the Personnel Department as Supervisor of Employment, Safety and Security. He retired after 23 years of service to devote full time as Town Justice of the Town of Herkimer. He retired on October 1, 1990 after 22 years of dedicated service. He was a communicant of Sts. Anthony And Joseph Church and a member of it's Holy Name Society and the St. Joseph's Choir, the East Herkimer Fire Department, Herkimer Exempt Fireman's Association, New York State Magistrates Association, Herkimer County Magistrates Association and served as a Past President, East Herkimer Fish And Game Club and Chicago Pneumatic Management Club. John is survived by two sons and daughters in law, John & his wife, Deanna G. Chvatal Jr of Vernon, CT and Dr David & his wife, Jackie Chvatal of The Villages, FL; his grandchildren, Andrew, Tiffiny, Kathryn, Meghan and Allison; five great grandchildren, Ashley, Victoria, Christopher, Matthew and Liam; his daughter in law, Donna Golicki of Herkimer; two nephews, Paul & his wife, Carol Bedworth and Norbert & his wife, Ruth Sands and several great nieces, great nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by two-step sons, Dr William Golicki and John Golicki. His funeral will be held Saturday morning at 11:00 from the Petykiewicz, Iocovozzi & Burns Funeral Home, 329 S. Washington St. Herkimer and at 11:30 in Sts. Anthony And Joseph Church where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by the Rev. Thomas Lawless pastor. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery. Calling hours will be Saturday morning from 9:00 to 11:00 at the Petykiewicz, Iocovozzi, & Burns Funeral Home.
