Mr. Richard P. Cancelino
Herkimer - Richard Paul "Dick" Cancelino, 70, passed away on Sunday, October 9, 2016 at St. Luke's Memorial Hospital.
Born in Herkimer on October 1, 1946, the son of the late Samuel and Katherine Babinec Cancelino. He attended Herkimer schools and graduated from Herkimer High School with the class of 1965. He honorably served his country with the US Marines during the Vietnam War and was Honorable Discharged on December 6, 1967 with the rank of Corporal. Richard was employed at the DPW in Herkimer for 20 years, after retiring, he continued working for the Village in the codes department.
Dick loved spending time with his sons, going to Buffalo Bills and NY Yankees games, watching NASCAR and Skiing. His passion in life was restoring classic cars, swap meets and drag racing. He was a great Dad and provider for his family. Though he pretended to not like certain things his sons asked him to do: changing their oil, laying down new floors, helping them move, he truly loved every second he was needed by them.
Dick is survived by his beloved wife, Darleen; two sons, Richard J. Cancelino of Albany and Donald J. Grogan of Herkimer; two beautiful granddaughters, Kayla and Samantha Grogan; one brother and sister in law, John and Pam Cancelino of Poland; his nephew, John Cancelino, Jr. of Tampa; his mother in law, Helen Rinko; three brothers in law, Joe Rinko, Mark Rinko and Richard Rinko; his special friends, John, Matt and Mike Spisak, Pete Macri and Tim Marusic and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
His funeral will be held Friday morning, October 14, 2016 at 11 AM in the Petykiewicz, Iocovozzi & Burns Funeral Home, 329 S. Washington St. Herkimer. Interment will be in Oak Hill Cemetery. Calling hours will be held Thursday evening from 5-8 PM in the Petykiewicz, Iocovozzi & Burns Funeral Home.
Thank you to David Dunbar who helped with Dick's care, shaving him and bringing his sugar free snacks. Thank you to Pete Macri and the Village workers for building a ramp, making things easier for Dick. Rosario, thank you for the many trips from Albany to be with Dick at the hospital.
