Dear Dennis, Diane and families, Please accept my deepest sympathy to all of you for the loss of Aunt Mary. I have such wonderful memories of growing up embraced by your family. Your mom, as well as Cookie, always treated me as if I was one of their own nieces, and for that I am truly grateful. Your mom's energy and enthusiam made gatherings with the Kluka/Sterzin/Sviatyla clan so much fun and always memorable. She will be deeply missed. My thoughts and prayers are with you at this sad time. Karen

Dear Dennis and family - I was so sorry to hear about your mother's death. My heart goes out to you all. Although I didn't know her, your mother's obituary painted such a lovely and loving picture of a very special person, and I know you will all feel her absence forever. But I trust you will also feel her presence always. I hope you will take lots of time to share among yourselves all the wonderful memories you have, and that your collective remembrances will comfort you, begin to heal you, and help you appreciate how blessed you all were to have shared your lives with your mother for so long. With love and hugs, Shelley

Diane we are so sorry to hear of the passing of your Mom. She was a very wonderful woman and I still remember the days she worked at Montgomery Wards. Over the years when I would see her I would always ask how you were and she was always so kind to me and loved sharing what you were doing.
May all your happy memories of her help you in your grief. God bless all of you.

Dennis and Dianne,
Please accept my condolences for your Mother,s passing, and extend to the rest of the family if possible. I will not be present Saturday, but will be thinking of you all, and of course the occasions over the years when when Mary was present. Some were on sad occasions, but most were memorable, whether it was a construction project in Herkimer, or Mary and Walter visiting us in Colorado, or the most recent memory of Mary attending a Chin graduation party. Regardless of the setting or reason for being there she was always attentive and concerned with everyone,s comfort, a perpetual hostess.
We would all do well to live as long and purely. Again, you have my sympathy. Please extend my special regards to your father.

Many years ago, my family and I were neighbors of the Sterzin family, and I especially remember their backyard swing that I was welcome to use at any time.
That was before 1952, when I left the "Creek Road" and Herkimer for my adult life.
In 2003, I returned to Herkimer for my mother's funeral, and I was so surprised and gratified to meet Walter and Mary again. I was very touched by the kindness that motivated their expressions of condolence to former neighbors.
Please accept my sympathy for your loss, and my recognition that true neighborliness has no time limits.
Sincerely,
Linda (Sokoloski) Hardy

Dear Aunt Mary, our lives are full of such wonderful memories from our visits to Herkimer to see you and Uncle Walt. How could we ever thank you for those memorable family dinners with your fine china and home grown string beans and corn. Senior "R" Club bowling tournaments would never have been the same without your consistent and accurate scorekeeping. And of course no one could quite give directions like "Sarge". Even after you became ill, your spirit never faltered, setting your schedule for attendance at all family events...rest assured that you will be on our minds, and close to our hearts at Emily's wedding. We have been truly blessed to have had you in our lives for this long. Our consolation is that you are now in a much better place. Give Daddy, Aunt Helen, Baba, Donald and David a hug for us. We love you very much, Loreen, Melonie, Daria, Peter, Cliff, Chip, Cody, Kacie, and Jesse

Denise, Elaine and family,
I know from experience the pain in loosing a mother. Time does heal the sorrow but never the sense of loss. I learned of your mother and her kindness through my dear brother, Pat, and am grateful to her and the whole Sterzin family for the love extended to him during his brief lifetime. She somehow replaced our mother who was taken from his life at an early age. We extend our sincerest condolences to you and the whole Sterzin family. With love

Please send Webster's Dictionary a photo of Mary Sterzin so that next to "nice lady" everyone can see what one looks like. Long before I met Mrs. Sterzin, I had heard about her from her "baby", Donald. He wouldn't stop bragging about her beef soup. If this happened now and not 40 years ago, Food Network's Bobby Flay would blow into Herkimer to challenge Mary to a beef soup throwdown! Although I've only seen Mary on special occasions when she visited Lexington - my life has been touched by her kindnesses. I always pressure cook my green beans because hers were so good and I'm still wearing a few pounds of her pumpkin pies. When I was undergoing treatment for cancer many years ago, Mary sent me get well cards…and slipped me money in the cards. It was about the cutest thing I'd ever seen. I put that money toward my après chemo hat collection. During Mary's treatment, I sent her a couple of the hats and was touched to learn that the soft pale-green beret that had gotten me through my chemo was helping her get through hers. Wouldn't you know…it looked a lot better on her! Mary's is a life that will be missed but not forgotten.
