Obituary of Virginia Brice Corwin

Dolgeville - Mrs. Virginia Brice Corwin, 95, of Spofford Avenue, formerly of Massachusetts, passed away Friday, August 28, 2015 at home with her family by her side. She was born in Providence, RI on June 25, 1920, the daughter of the late Harry and Kathryn Knight Brice. Virginia (Ginger) obtained her Bachelor's degree from the University of Rhode Island and went on to obtain her Masters' Degree in Teaching. She was married to the love of her life, Alan R. Corwin on July 2, 1945 in Hope Church, Providence, RI. Alan passed away on July 3, 1988. As a member of Herkimer County Cooperative Extension team, Virginia was responsible for bringing the Meals-on-Wheels program to Herkimer County and it is still going strong today. Virginia taught school for thirty years. Although only one of those years was in New York (Stratford), that year was her favorite. She later retired from Westwood Junior High School in Westwood, MA. Virginia is survived by one son and his partner, Alan and Jennifer Brice Corwin of Bremerton, WA; two daughters and sons in law, Virginia L. and Michael Shaftic and Patricia A. and Terry Call, all of Dolgeville; her three beloved grandchildren, Michael A. Shaftic of Oppenheim, Elizabeth M. and Joseph Lyons, US Army and Kathryn M. Call of Dolgeville; one great-grandchild, Kassidy Lyons; two sisters, Barbara Menke of Reno, NV and Zilla Thomas of Seekonk, MA and several nieces, nephews and special friends. She was predeceased by her sister, Natalie Antonio. In keeping with Virginia's wishes, there will be no public services. Arrangements are under the direction of the Petykiewicz, Iocovozzi & Burns Funeral Home, and 329 S. Washington St. Herkimer, NY. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Virginia's memory may be made to Hospice & Palliative Care, 4277 Middle Settlement Rd, New Hartford, NY 13413 or to the Alzheimer's Association, Mohawk Valley Chapter, 258 Genesee Street, Suite 509, Utica, NY 13502. Virginia's family would like to extend their sincere appreciation to the staff and nurses of Hospice and to her caregivers.
