To the VanVechten family : My wife and I will miss this fine person and gentleman. We spent many hours these past few years at Oats Gym discussing his children and what they were up to( he was proud of all of them ),his b-ball and softball experiences, his job and West Canada Valley sports. We travel the Thruway often and will think of him on every trip.

Dave, Erin, Kelly, Brian,
We were so saddened to hear of the loss of your Dad. When a person is lucky enough to have four wonderful children as he did, there is a part of that parent in each child that will never die. You are all so very special in your own way.
You are his legacy.

I am Kathy VanVechten's sister, and her husband Artie is more like a brother than a brother-in-law to me. I grieve for him the most, as I can't imagine what it is like to lose a sibling. I live out of town, and would see David periodically throughout the years. Each time I saw him, I remembered a double date with Kathy and Artie where we went to the drive in to see Cool Hand Luke the night before Easter. I couldn't eat hard boiled eggs for years after that! David and I always had a good laugh when we saw each other and reminisced. He will be sorely missed.

To the family of Dave, please accept the regrets and sympathy from the Slocum family; Sally, Derric, Megan and myself.
Dave and I spent many fun times together through high school and beyond playing hoops in the local leagues and just hanging out. Thinking of those times brought a smile to my face as your father was always a prankster. Back then he always drove old beat-up 6 cycle cars, but always drove them as though they were muscle cars. We did some crazy things together and always had the good fortunate of never being caught... My smiles often turned to little giggles.
Dave's passion for sports never faded and he kept himself fit and playing right up to last year, after most everyone his age had given it up.
Over the years Dave befriended scores of people, I never heard anyone say anything negative about him. He was always a kind and considerate man.
Everytime I think of Dave I will recall those "good times" and I will continue to laugh and giggle. The day will arrive when you will be able to do the same.
God Bless your all.

Dear Ann and family,
I am so saddened to hear of the passing of your brother, David! I remember him so well as such a great athlete at West Canada. He played such a significant role in bringing much honor and championship status when participating in West Canada sports.
I'm sorry that I am unable to see you in person since my husband and I are leaving this afternoon (Thursday, 5/10) for vacation, but please know that you will be in my thoughts and prayers. My sincerest condolences to you and your family during this difficult time.
I always considered you a true friend during our years at West Canada and still do!
Take care, God Bless, and may all the wonderful memories you hold dear help you through your sorrow!
Your friend,

To the family of Dave VanVechten:
We truly loss a great guy when Dave passed away. I had no idea he was sick. I fondly recall all the great chats we had at Oat's Gym. He was really a great guy and always said hello to me. It was obvious he was proud of his job for the NYS Thruway Authority from the numerous stories he told me about his days on the job. Take care and you are all in my prayers.

Words cannot express the sadness we all feel for this terrible loss. Dave was a good man and a good father, and my family and I were fortunate enough to get to spend a lot of time with him throughout the years. Being close friends with Brian for the last 15 years, I got to know Dave both as a father of a friend and as a person. He had a very unique sense of humor and loved sports. That love of sports helped shape a very close bond between Brian and his father, and he will be sorely missed. Brian, you know my family and I are always here for you if you need anything at all. Just say the word. Stay strong.

I would like to offer my condolences to the family and friends of David VanVechten. When I think of David I think of West Canada basketball. A man is often measured by his children. David and Colleen have great children all of whom I have felt honored to teach. I know he will be missed by all that knew him.
