Nephew Marty Aversa posted a condolence
Saturday, November 5, 2005
Dear Aunt Nancy - My sister Cathy wrote that her special memories of Uncle Martin include "trying to convince Marty [me] that he had to share half of his birthday presents because they had the same name." I would like to add that the source of half of those birtday presents WAS Uncle Martin (along with Grandma, Uncle John and you). Also, I would like to offer the following cherished recollections: his crowning construction engineering accomplishment in Fonda, the replacement of the rotting wooden base of our large two-car garage with a permanent concrete foundation while preserving the garage itself (which local contractors who had given estimates for the job said would have to be torn down and then rebuilt after the foundation was poured); his lively recounting of the classic stories (i.e., "Stone Soup") of his youth for Matt Conlon and me when we would drive from college to your house for a good Italian meal; his hearty enjoyment ("I can taste the grain!") of the whole wheat bread from the Russian Orthodox Monastery in Jordanville; his attendance at La Boheme in the park in Staten Island in 1987 (along with Mom, Dad and my neighbors John and Linda); and his warm welcome of Yulia into our family. Love, Marty

Dear Aunt Nancy,
Uncle Martin, Grandma, Uncle John, and YOU! were so wonderful to all of us, and always made us kids feel special and loved, no matter what was going on.
Here are just a few of the special memories I have of Uncle Martin:
… eating those Hungarian Wax peppers that were so hot that the tears streamed down his cheeks (though that didn't stop him or my Dad)
… catching fireflies with my brother Marty
… playing pitch and catch w/ Jack and Marty in our back yard
… looking for the imaginary Malabuta with Nancy
… trying to convince Marty that he had to share half of his birthday presents because they had the same name
… giving up his summer vacation every year to help Mom & Dad fix up our house
… secretly redoing our entire front sidewalk (with Uncle John's help) while we were in Massachusetts for a week
… listening to opera records with Dad
… hearing him say "I love you!" every time he saw us
… coming to our house every Thanksgiving w/ Grandma, Uncle John & Aunt Nancy, and watching the football games after Thanksgiving dinner.
… going to see La Boheme at Munson Williams theater in the mid- 70s
… discussing politics with my mother
… politely smiling through my mother's relentless barbs to get him to stop smoking (though he eventually did quit)
… taking us to visit the Fork & Hoe (I couldn't believe how HOT and how LOUD it was …)
… avidly listening to the tapes of the choral concerts that my father conducted
… hearing his cheerful "Yes, yes!" and encouraging smile
… always asking about my mother-in-law
… watching sports on TV with Mark & Matt and reminiscing about "when WE played football …"
Love, Cathy

Dear Aversa Family,
I was so sorry to learn of your loss from my sister. "Uncle Martin" will be missed. After reading the wonderful comments and memories on this website it's clear that he was a special guy and loved by many.
I remember the family coming to Fonda from Frankfort and joining the family there with food, lots of it, along with smiles hugs and kisses. I also remember the "Aversa projects" that would be done almost every summer. When the family would help and complete a job, sidewalk, patio etc. What a wonderful thing, to improve property and have a great time doing it!
I tip my cap (which I also remember as a trademark) to Martin and the entire Aversa family! My sincere condolences to you, Love Tom Persse

I was so sorry to see in the Schenectady Gazette, that "Uncle Martin" had passed away. I had not seen him in years, since I had moved from Upper Prospect St. in Fonda across from Tony and Rose and family. I remember getting as excited as Jack, Martin, Cathy and Nancy when Uncle John, Uncle Martin and Aunt Nancy were coming to visit. May all your wonderful memories give you comfort. God Bless you all, you are a wonderful family and have always been great friends of the Persse family! Please all of you take care. Love, Nancy

I was so sad to hear about Marty. Marty always had a smile on his face and just seemed to light up the room. I loved our memories of visiting you and Marty in Frankfort and hanging out with you two. Always a favorite to come see Marty and you! I know years have passed but I still think of you and love you very much. You are in my prayers and please know how special Marty was to our family.

Dear Nancy,
I just learned of Marty’s death last night. I can’t tell you how sorry I am for your loss. Once again I am in the middle of the ocean thousands of miles away. So often I find myself drifting back to the times in spent in the band hall with Marty, Tony Spina, Rossi and the rest of the guys. I would spend hours listening to them tell stories of the old Frankfort, the vets band, football with my uncle Vito and stories of family. Marty was a passionate man, a gentle man and a very generous man. I was looking forward to spending time with him in the spring. I am glad that he lived a good life. His life made a difference. He certainly had a great impact on my life. I will certainly miss him and will draw upon the lessons I learned from him in the years to come. I know that the last few years were a struggle for him. I am glad that he didn’t have to endure a life of suffering. I am grateful that when his time was up Marty was called quickly. You always say that the people of the old Frankfort were like one big extended family. Marty was family to me and I want you to know that I loved him and share your sorrow. I will be sure to stop by when I return home.
Love, Johnny

Marty will be greatly missed by us. There could never be a better neighbor. I grew up with Marty looking after me and I knew he was watching after our kids. We will miss his cheerful hello from the porch and it will be so hard not seeing him there. God Bless you and you have our deepest sympathy.

Nancy, Marty will be missed by all who knew him. He was always there with a smile and a warm greeting, and his helping hand. He was Frank's right hand man building our home on Brockway Road. Loved our children, with all his warmth taking time with them while building. Sorry we can't be with You at this time.

Nancy,
I am thinking about the many times that I walked by your house while growing up on Sheldon Ave and whenever Marty was outside, he always had a smile on his face and said hello. When Marty would drive by our house, he would always wave and he always had that smile. As I read the condolences, I can see that Marty was special to many people.

Dear Nancy: Part of me, and part of all of us, died with Marty. I just can't imagine a world without Marty Aversa. We have been friends for probably 70 years. I am proud to say that I loved, respected and treasured him. He was always there with a smile and a helping hand. When Ann and I came back to visit we always looked forward to seeing you both and having lunch or dinner together. I have such wonderful memories of Marty when we were kids. Baseball at the Hilltop, football at Hollister's garage and ice skating at the Northside School. Years ago Marty gave me many old phonograph records that I still play. Now I will listen to them and thank God that Martin Aversa came into my life 70 years ago. Nancy, you are such a devoted sister and we all love you. Marty was the closest to being a perfect Christian that I have ever met. Somewhere in His Kingdom, Marty is already looking for someone he can help. Our love to you always-- we will see you next year--Bob and Ann

Nancy,
There will never be anyone like Marty. He was one in a million. He always had a kind word, smiles, patience and a warm laugh. He knew the news and details of each one of us and made us all feel like we were so special. He was something else. Beyond that, we know he loved the Lord and now all the pains aches and suffering are over. We will all miss him here but he is free from sickness. We send you our love and will pray for you to be strong during this very hard time. Very few people can have so many say such nice things about them, but Marty was a friend to all. God Bless and comfort you.
Love, Anthony,Susan and Family

Nancy,
As you know, your brother is very well loved by all. I will particularly miss his guidance and direction that he gave to me while I was with the Red Band. I looked forward to see him and meet up with him at every session. He greeted us all ALWAYS with a smile and a story. His smile will be missed, his stories will be missed, but we will look forward when we rejoin him again....with that same smile, but a new, different story.
Love,
Dave and Wilma Jeffalone and the kids
