Obituary of LaVergne McMurray

Frankfort - Mr. LaVergne McMurray, 83, of 245 W. Main St. passed away Tuesday, March 10, 2015 in Mohawk Valley Health Care Center with his loving family by his side. He was born in Warsaw, NY on September 10, 1931, the son of the late John and Lois Hull McMurray. He attended and graduated from Wyoming Central School in 1948. LaVergne received his Bachelors of Science and Music Education from Fredonia State Teachers College in 1952. He served during the Korean War with the US Army until his Honorable Discharge on November 5, 1954 with the rank of Tech Sergeant and was the recipient of the Bronze Star. Following his military career, he attended and graduated from Syracuse University with his Masters Degree in Music Education in 1959. He was married to Eleanor Jane Knox on June 20, 1959 in the First Baptist Church, Frankfort. Eleanor Jane passed away on January 6, 1988. LaVergne was the music teacher for Frankfort-Schuyler Central School from January of 1955 until his retirement in June of 1995. He was a member of the Morning Star United Methodist Church and served on their Administrative Council, Board of Trustees, was a former Sunday School teacher as well as their Choir Director and Organist. He was a member of the AARP and served as Past President and Chairman of the Legislative Committee, Mohawk Valley Chapter. He served on the Board of Directors of the Mohawk Homestead, he was Chairman and member of the Oak View Cemetery Board of Directors and President of the Frankfort Free Library. He was also a member of the Frankfort-Schuyler Teachers Association, the NYS United Teachers Association, as well as many regional and local teachers associations. He was a loyal member of the Frankfort Kiwanis Club since 1968 and was the recipient of Kiwanian of the year many times. He was currently serving as the club secretary, a position he held for many years. LaVergne is survived by one son and daughter in law, Steven and Carrie McMurray of Frankfort; two daughters and sons in law, Susan and Dan Quackenbush of Rochester and Melinda and James Ford of West Chester, PA; five grandchildren, Andrew James Ford, Thomas Edward Ford, Peter Michael Ford, Jack Thomas McMurray and Audrey Jane McMurray. He was predeceased by two brothers, Harry McMurray and Lewis McMurray and one sister, Nancy Emerson. His funeral will be held Monday morning at 10:15 AM from the V.J. Iocovozzi Funeral Home, Inc., 203 Second Ave. Frankfort and at 11:00 AM in Morning Star United Methodist Church, Acme Rd. Frankfort, where his funeral will be celebrated by the Rev. Robert Wollaber. Spring interment will be in Oak View Cemetery. Calling hours will be Sunday evening from 4-8 PM in the V.J. Iocovozzi Funeral Home, Inc.
