Herkimer - Rev. Guido Scalzi, 98, of 708 Jeffrey St. passed away Sunday, January 11, 2015 in Valley Health Services.
He was born in West Virginia on April 26, 1916, the son of the late Antonio and Maria Scalzi. As a young child the Scalzi family relocated to Italy. He attended schools in Italy and seminary in the Province of Calabria.
He was married to Franca Gorietti on May 3, 1948 in Rome, Italy. The couple came to the United States in 1951 and settled in the Mohawk Valley. He attended Millbury College and Syracuse University where he majored in Language. Franca passed away on December 13, 2001. He was employed as a language teacher at Thomas R. Proctor High School from September 8, 1964 until his retirement on June 30, 1981. Rev. Scalzi was a Missionary Preacher throughout the Mohawk Valley and surrounding areas. He was the Editor of the Il Faro (The Lighthouse Magazine) and hosted a weekly Italian radio program, La Voce Della Speranza (The Voice of Hope). He served as an Italian to English translator throughout the area for many years. Rev. Scalzi wrote a book about his life of faith in Italian and was later translated into English, Incontro Con Dio (My Encounter With God). Rev. Scalzi was a member of Emmanuel House of Prayer, the Retired Teachers Association and the Christian Church of North America.
Guido is survived by his beloved sisters in law and brothers in law, Miriam and Dr. Daniel Colino of Schuyler, Sergio and Anna Maria Gorietti of Rome, Italy and Genoveffa Scalzi of Detroit, MI and several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by three brothers, Rinaldo Scalzi, Paolo Scalzi and Ricciardetto Scalzi
His funeral will be held Wednesday morning at 10:00 AM in the Petykiewicz, Iocovozzi & Burns Funeral Home, 329 S. Washington St. Herkimer. Spring interment will be in Oak Hill Cemetery. Calling hours will be Tuesday, January 20 from 4-7 PM in the Petykiewicz, Iocovozzi & Burns Funeral Home.
