Frankfort - Mr. Leo N. Bonfardeci, 93, of Frankfort, passed away Monday, August 4, 2014 in his home with his family by his side.
He was born in Frankfort on November 13, 1920, the son of the late John and Florence LaForte Bonfardeci. He attended Frankfort schools and graduated from Frankfort High School. He served with the US Army during World War II in the European Theater and was Honorably Discharged on December 4, 1945. He served with the Company C 748th Tank Battalion in Central Europe, Northern France and the Rhineland. He was the recipient of many medals along with a Purple Heart for injuries sustained on April 6, 1945. Following his service, Leo was a member of the Frankfort Vets Semiprofessional Football Team, 1946. He was married to Marie Gauthier on June 5, 1954 in St. Joseph's Church, Utica a blessed union of 60 years. Leo was employed by Chicago Pneumatic, Univac, Ilion and Utica Plants for over 25 years and retired from Utica Boilers (ECR International). He was a communicant of Our Lady Queen of Apostles Church, and a member of the VFW Post #502, Frankfort - Ilion and the Military Order of The Purple Heart. Leo was a devoted husband, father and grandfather who took great pride in his family. He enjoyed gardening and was especially famous for his garlic and tomatoes. When he was not at the grocery store, Leo could be found building something special in his workshop or fixing something that needed repair. He will be fondly remembered for his words of wisdom, Saturday morning pancake breakfasts, Sunday afternoon spaghetti and meatball dinners and his early morning happy birthday phone calls.
Leo is survived by his beloved wife, Marie Bonfardeci; two sons and one daughter in law, Leo and Donna Bonfardeci of Chittenango and John Bonfardeci of Sandwich, MA; two daughters and sons in law, AnnMarie and Joseph Viti and Kathleen and James Montague all of Frankfort; one sister, Frances Ciola of Utica; one brother, Anthony Bonfardeci of Ilion; seven grandchildren, Jessica and her husband, John De Cicco, Melissa and her husband, Vincent La Bella, Rebecca and her husband, Adam Kaleta, Jolynn Viti, Nicholas Berry, Carrie Sanborn and Alyssa Bonfardeci; seven great grandchildren and several in-laws, nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by three brothers, Antonio Bonfardeci, Rosario Bonfardeci and Thomas Bonfardeci.
His funeral will be held Friday morning at 10:00 from the V.J. Iocovozzi Funeral Home, Inc., 203 Second Ave. Frankfort and at 10:30 in Our Lady Queen of Apostles Church where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by the Rev. Leo Potvin and assisted by Deacon James Bower. Interment will be in Mt. Olivet Cemetery. Calling hours will be Thursday evening from 4-8 at the V.J. Iocovozzi Funeral Home, Inc. Members of the VFW will meet Thursday evening at 7:00 at the funeral home for services.
