Though I didn't know John for a long time, I still called him "Uncle John", and he always called me by my longtime nickname, Tiger. I'll remember him for his witty quips, and how he always had a joke or two, or some story to tell. He would ask us to dinner, and always pick up the tab...and he never arrived without a small trinket or "brain teaser" game for Jordan, and quite frequently a gift from the heart for "Chainsaw" and/or me. You will be dearly missed, Uncle John, and never ever forgotten. We love you and may you rest in peace.

Joan and Family,
I have not been in touch with John for many years, but we certainly enjoyed our high school years! One of my funniest memories of John was when a neighbor had responded to John's interest in a shotgun. His neighbor offered to have John shoot the gun off his back porch into the woods (in town, of course!).
John was warned about the shotgun's 'kick'. To prevent major injury, John was told to 'lean into the gun' as he fired and to hold the shotgun hard against his shoulder to absorb the huge shock. John did as he was told, leaning into the gun, holding the weapon hard against his shoulder, and slowly, carefully drawing the trigger....
There was a sharp, but tiny 'pop', and six dry beans rolled out of the 'business' end of the shotgun. John nearly fell off the porch, but recovered in time. (When he finally shared his story with us, it took us nearly 30 minutes to start breathing again, we were laughing so hard...).
Then there were the model rockets .... another time, perhaps.
Beth and I send our warmest regards at this sad time.

Sending my love to the Murphy family. I have fond memories of John creatively coming up with a nickname for me and calling me "ringer"... He also made a phenomenal grilled cheese! xo -K
