Obituary of Robert Nelson Hughes

Frankfort - Mr. Robert Nelson Hughes, 79, of 528 S. Litchfield St. passed away unexpectedly Monday, April 26, 2010 in St. Elizabeth's Medical Center. He was born in Whitehall, NY on October 10, 1930, the son of the late Idwal Edris and Lily Kendall Hughes. He attended Frankfort schools and graduated from Frankfort High School with the class of 1947. He later received his Bachelors Degree from Oswego State and his Masters Degree from Colgate University. He served with the US Army during the Korean War. He was united in marriage with Margaret Zizzi on November 22, 1958 in St. Mary's Church, Frankfort. Bob was an Assistant Superintendent for the New Hartford School System for many years until his retirement in 1985. He was a member of Our Lady Queen of Apostles Church, the American Legion Post #845 and the D.A.V. Stars & Strips Chapter 82. He was a former member of the Frankfort-Schuyler School Board, The Board of Directors of The Mohawk Valley General Hospital and Frankfort Library Board. In his youth, Bob was an exceptional athlete and was recognized as one of the best football players coming out of Frankfort High School. He later played with the US Army's Football team while serving in Korea, the Frankfort Vet's Football Team and coached the Frankfort Falcons both of which were semi-pro teams. Bob was an avid reader and an accomplished golfer. He possessed a spirit of loving life and had the versatility of enjoying a cold Becks while having a good political conversation and telling a good story at Thurston's Restaurant. He will be sadly missed by his morning coffee buddies at the Knight Spot. Bob is survived by his beloved wife of 51 years, Margaret Hughes; two sons and daughters in law, Jon and Mary Hughes of Ilion and Daniel and Lisa Hughes of Effort, PA; one daughter, Roberta Breit of Frankfort; his cherished grandchildren, Robert Hughes, Zackary Hughes, Megan Breit, Maxwell Breit, Maria Hughes and Jenna Hughes; his in laws, Marilyn Hughes of Whitesboro and Joseph and Diane Zizzi of New Hartford and several nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. He was predeceased by his son in law, Chris Breit on December 2, 2006, his twin grandsons, John Francis Breit and Robert Nelson Breit on February 14, 2000 and one brother, Kendall Hughes in 2001. His funeral will be held Thursday afternoon at 1:15 PM from the V. J. Iocovozzi Funeral Home, Inc., 203 Second Ave., Frankfort and at 2:00 PM in Our Lady Queen of Apostles Church where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by the Rev. Alfred Lamanna and assisted by Deacon James Bower. Interment will be in Mt. Olivet Cemetery. Calling hours will be Wednesday from 4-7 at the V. J. Iocovozzi Funeral Home, Inc. Contributions in Robert's memory may be made to Friends of the Frankfort Library, S. Frankfort St, Frankfort, NY 13340. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
