Frankfort - Mrs. Barbara Ann Whitney, 71, of 224 W Main St passed away Wednesday, February 24, 2010 in St. Luke's Memorial Hospital.
Barbara was born in Amsterdam on March 25, 1938, the daughter of the late Edward and Frances Ludwian Wolosz. She attended St. Mary's School, Gloversville and graduated from St. Mary's Institute, Amsterdam with the class of 1956. She later attended and graduated from the College of St. Rose with the class of 1960 and received her Bachelors Degree in Education. Barbara received her Masters Degree in Education from Colgate University with the class of 1984. She taught for the Frankfort school system from 1960 to 1963 and later for St. Johnsville schools from 1963 to 1966. Mrs. Whitney was a French and English teacher for Herkimer High School until her retirement in 2002. She was married to George P. Whitney on May 4, 1966 in St. Mary's Church, Gloversville. Mr. Whitney passed away on June 26, 1994. She was a very active communicant of Our Lady Queen of Apostles Church and was a member of its parish council, was involved with the Called To Be Church program and was a confirmation teacher. Barbara served on the Auriesville Shrine Council, on the Herkimer County Catholic Charities board of directors and was a member of the NYS Retired Teachers Association. She was a great lover of music and sang with the Mohawk Valley Chorus and St. Francis De Sales Church Choir with her son Paul directing. She was also one of the founders of the Frankfort Bicentennial Choir. She was a former member of the Forte Nightly Club and the Frankfort Garden Club.
Barbara is survived by two sons, Paul Whitney and Scott Whitney both of Frankfort; one daughter and son in law, Anne and Dr. Michael Mitchko of Victor; her cherished grandchildren, Madelyn Mitchko, Michael Mitchko and Katheryn Mitchko; her sisters in law, Dorothy Whitney of Frankfort and Jean Sampson of Niskayuna and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Her funeral will be held Monday morning at 10:00 AM from the V. J. Iocovozzi Funeral Home, Inc., 203 Second Ave., Frankfort and at 10:30 AM in Our Lady Queen of Apostles Church where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by the V.Rev. Anthony Barratt assisted by Deacon James Bower. Spring interment will be in Mt. Olivet Cemetery. Calling hours will be Sunday from 2-4 & 7-9 at the V. J. Iocovozzi Funeral Home, Inc.
Contributions in Barbara's memory may be made to the Herkimer County Humane Society, PO Box 73, Mohawk, NY 13407-1154 or to the Shrine of Our Lady of Martyrs, 136 Shrine Rd., Fultonville, NY 12072. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
