Once in a lifetime you are blessed with a friend who is willing to share your hopes and your dreams, accept your fears and your faults and stand by your side when all others have long since jumped ship. This is the friend that Custy was to me. We first met in 1967 when I was the new kid on the block - a raw recruit Jaycee with a ton of youthful energy and very limited knowledge of the world beyond my doorstep. Frank was already an accepted leader in the New York State Jaycees and had been recognized as the best local chapter president in the state as president of the Frankfort Jaycees. We couldn't have been farther apart in our experience in life or how to get where we wanted to be. We had a very difficult and confrontational beginning - old guard vs. new guard - and the young lion got the dressing down that he deserved. But Custy didn't stop there. He taught me how to take a hit and get back up. He became my mentor when it would have been far easier to just write me off. By 1973 I was elected State President of the NYS Jaycees and I as well as thousands of other young Jaycees would benefit from Custy's 10 year rein as Executive VP of the NYS Jaycees. We stayed close for nearly 50 years and shared many a tear and many a smile along the way. Just weeks before Frank passed, we completed a first edition book about the NYS Jaycees and their history of individual development through personal commitment to family and community. That has since been turned over to the NYS Jaycees and will soon be ready for publication. Frank's years of leadership and personal sacrifice for a cause will now be preserved for many a future leader. He left a path to follow and I, for one, will always be grateful that there was a Frank J. Castellano in my life. I miss you Custy. Rest in peace my friend.

The boys went out for night of fun. They ended up at the Boston Store. Going their separate ways to meet at the conclusion, they reached for keepsakes as they exited. Custy reached for a long fur coat and draped it over his towering body! On their way out the door my dad said Custy was grabbed and escorted away. The boys waited outside wondering what to do. For sure Custy would be sent to jail. After awhile Custy appeared. His friends were relieved. They asked what happened. Custy said " Boys, I didn't get the coat but I picked up a nice wallet on my way out to door! I can only hope that heaven is as my father wished it to be. A fantastic place with Nash doing impressions and my dad and Custy catching up. Few will ever be so lucky to have had so many dear friends. I will remember him fondly and miss him for the rest of my life.

Frank Castellano's tenure in Canastota marked the glory years of the New York State Jaycees. He was the rock upon which succeeding administrations built a continuing program of service to more than 200 communities. It was a privilege to serve with him on three executive committees and to count him as a friend. Rest in peace, Custy!

My name is Debi (Hubish) Shields and I was the first female elected State President of the NY State Jaycees in 1991. Custy always teased me about being the first state president he ever kissed. I spoke to him very early this year and he brought that memory back to me and we had a great laugh. I am very grateful for his life and dedication for "service to humanity". He will be sadly missed but his legacy will carry on. Condolences to his family. I pray for your strength and comfort.

Sonny was a major force behind our family reunion (Solaro Sisters) ten years ago. We had our "cousins" get togethers to plan it and had alot of fun. If it wasn't for him, none of us would have our family books with the family history. Rest in peace.

I feel weakened to learn of Frank "Custy's" passing. I met him only once but have heard so much of him. He was a kind, passionate, and humble man whose love did not only
extend to his family but also to the Jaycee organization. I met him during my term as NYS president and before that, spoke to him several times as executive director under the term of state president Rollie Balanza.
We were trying to re-establish a Frankfort/Herkimer Jaycee chapter in his community and in nearby towns where he resided. In my conversations with Custy, he shared so many memorable stories about the Jaycees. He told us of his travels in many communities in New York and funny stories about working with some of the state presidents. More importantly, he recalled how he raised funds to put up the New York State Jaycees building in Canastota, New York. No wonder, the building then was known as "Custy's Castle".
The last time I spoke to him was during the time of JCI New York Senate President Jesse Arteche. Jesse asked me to coordinate with Custy the preparation and eventual
publication of a coffee table book about the New York State Jaycees. Custy was very excited about it and he said this was a "great" idea to remind younger generation of
Jaycees of the history of the state organization and the Jaycee movement. It was a touch-and-go situation at that time whether to push through with the project or not.
Keeping track of a long list of past presidents and what they can remember of during their time was a big challenge in itself.
But early this year, I received a draft of the stories of some of the past presidents including that of Custy's. I am not aware if that draft was finalized but I know now the
reason why it has to be done. It is a book about the state organization where thousands upon thousands of Jaycees had joined and still thrive in some communities. Today, it
may not be as big as it once was but the legacy of leadership it has passed on to its members is priceless. Frank "Custy" Castellano played a big role in it during its
heydays. Similarly, before his passing, he did too, in a book which he may have wished to be published as his final "footprint".
As for me, a U.S. Ambassadorship plaque, which I received from the New York State Jaycees and hangs in my library, will always be a reminder of Custy's life. It was an award named in his honor: "Frank 'Custy' Castellano Ambassadorship Award".
God bless Custy. Not a goodbye but see you again.

Our hearts are broken over the loss of our favorite Uncle! To our cousins and their families our deepest condolences! Our love, thoughts and blessings are with you in your time of sorrow! We have so many fond memories of Uncle Frank. One I will never forget is when we we driving in a blizzard back from Utica in Nana's car and the wipers quit. Not missing a beat Uncle Frank rolled down the window as he said hand me the snow brush. He stuck his arm out the window brushing the snow of the windshield and kept heading for Frankfort as his wife said " Son are we still on the road? " " Mar when we're off the road you'll know it! " As we turned on to the old steel deck bridge coming off of Herkimer Road, Nana's beast Monaco got stuck. He said Joe ( his son), Jacki get out and push. And there we were my cousin and I pushing the beast in a blizzard while Uncle Frank hit the gas. It took a bit but the beast moved. Joe and I had to jump back in because Uncle Frank wouldn't stop the car just on the off chance that it got stuck again. Or the time he had left his Brill creme out on the bathroom sink and Nana went in to brush her teeth, she didn't have her glasses on and used the Brill creme. " Ah, Sonny gosh damn you! How many times have I told you not to leave this damned thing on the sink? " Uncle Frank was laughing so hard he was crying. For my hubby it was the last minute calls to go place bets on the ponies for him at Thurston's. " Hey Andy can you run down and get my bets in? " Off the hubby'd go giggling " I hope George ( Frank ) is there I still can't figure these things out. " When you get to heaven Dear Heart your Mom, Dad, Aunt Mary and all our family and friends will have the chow and coffee waiting for you!
